How Clothes Are Supposed to Fit (A Simple Guide)

By Emily Zhao — Wore the wrong size for years. Learned what to look for.

Most people wear the wrong size. Not because they are bad at shopping. Because they do not know how clothes are supposed to fit.

You try on a shirt. It feels okay. You buy it. Later, you realize the shoulder seam is halfway down your arm. Or the pants are too long. Or the jacket pulls at the buttons.

Here is a simple guide to how clothes should fit. No tailoring required. Just basics.

Shirts and Tops

Shoulder seams should hit at the edge of your shoulder bone. Not halfway down your arm. Not hanging off. Right at the corner.

If the seam falls past your shoulder, the shirt is too big. If the seam sits on top of your shoulder before the edge, it is too small.

Sleeve length for short sleeves should end halfway between your shoulder and elbow. For long sleeves, the cuff should hit the base of your thumb when your arms are down.

Body length should cover your waistband. Not so long that it bunches up. Not so short that your stomach shows when you raise your arms.

Chest and waist should not pull. If you see horizontal lines across the buttons, it is too tight. If you can pinch more than a few inches of fabric on the sides, it is too loose.

Pants

Waist should stay up without a belt. Not tight enough to leave marks. Not loose enough to slide down. You should be able to fit two fingers inside the waistband comfortably.

Length depends on the style.

StyleWhere the Hem Should Hit
Dress pantsJust above the floor with shoes on. A slight break (fold) at the front.
Chinos or casual pantsHit the top of your shoes. No bunching at the bottom.
JeansPersonal preference. Cuffed, stacked, or hitting the shoe. Just not dragging on the floor.
ShortsEnd 1-3 inches above the knee. Not longer. Not much shorter.

Seat (backside) should not be saggy or tight. If you see horizontal wrinkles pulling across the back, they are too tight. If there is a fistful of extra fabric, they are too loose.

Jackets and Blazers

Shoulders are the most important part. The shoulder seam should hit exactly at your shoulder bone. Not beyond. Not before. Shoulder fit cannot be altered easily. Everything else can.

Button stance should not pull. When you button the jacket (if it has one button), there should be no X-shaped wrinkles pulling across your stomach.

Sleeve length should show about a half inch of your shirt cuff.

Jacket length should cover your seat. The bottom hem should hit around your knuckles when your arms are down.

Common Fit Mistakes

MistakeWhat to Look For
Shirt too tightHorizontal pulling across chest or buttons
Shirt too looseShoulder seams past your shoulder bone
Pants too longFabric bunching at the bottom
Pants too shortHem does not reach your shoes
Jacket too bigShoulder seams hang past your shoulders
Jacket too smallButton pulls; cannot move arms freely

The One Rule That Matters Most

Fit matters more than price. A 50shirtthatfitsperfectlylooksbetterthana50shirtthatfitsperfectlylooksbetterthana200 shirt that does not.

Do not buy it if the fit is wrong thinking you will “grow into it” or “lose weight for it.” Buy clothes that fit you now.

The Bottom Line

Clothes should fit at the shoulders, waist, and length. Those are the three places that matter most.

Shoulder seams at your shoulder bone. Waistband staying up without a belt. Hem not dragging on the floor.

That is it. Everything else is style preference.
